Keep the Channel Open

  • “There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique.  And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it.  It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions.  It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.  You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work.  You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you.  Keep the channel open. … No artist is pleased.  [There is] no satisfaction whatever at any time.  There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.” – Martha Graham, Dancer and Choreographer as told to Agnes De Mille over a soda in Schrafft’s in 1943.

Face Painting with Chianti and Jeff

Posted in behind the scenes, face & body art on March 18, 2010 by MassiveMissive

On Tuesday we had the fourth shoot in Clayton Hall and Nancy Kartoon’s face painting collaboration.  This time it was Chianti and her father Jeff who were the skin canvas’ for Nancy’s art.  Barbara Muller was on hair and creative direction…and just generally keeping us all on track.  Once again I shot both photo and video behind-the-scenes.  I actually shot more video than photos this time, so stay tuned for the video.  Video takes a little longer to edit and put together.  But in the meantime, here are a few of the best of the behind-the-scenes photos.  Nancy is simply amazing in her painting ability.  And Clayton was stellar as always in capturing the soul of his models.  We edited the finished film shots tonight and I was blown away by how great they were again.  Great job Clayton!

Face Painting with Sara

Posted in behind the scenes, face & body art on February 7, 2010 by MassiveMissive
A couple images from Empire West Studios’ face painting shoot with Sara on Thursday this past week.  It was really fun and interesting to watch the transformation of Sara as Nancy Kartoon (the Face Painting Artist) painted her into “character”.  I can’t wait to see the final photos that Clayton took.  We will also be posting the final images from the first two face & body painting shoots that took place last month.  Stay tuned and get excited to see this new work!!
